New Consols

Equipment at New Consols

This mine was a veritable treasure-trove of machinery, some of which was old even by 19th century standards.  This view shows Phillip's Shaft 80-inch pumping engine on the left, the remains of the rotative engine for operating the copper crushing rolls in the centre and the beam winding engine on the right.  The latter was so out of date that it still had chains around the drum rather than wire rope.  Sadly, all this marvellous equipment was scrapped in 1938.
