Wheal Martha engine house. Phillip's Shaft was originally the site of a Sim's compound engine which was replaced by a 50-inch conventional engine which was in turn replaced by an 80-inch engine when the mine was reworked as New Consols. To fit the new engine the house had to be 'stretched' by adding a new bob wall, strengthened by buttresses.
