Greenburrow Shaft engine house balance bob pit

To balance the weight of wooden pitwork in the shaft one or more 'balance boxes' was usually attached to the pitwork of a pumping engine. The cast-iron box would have been filled with rock and old cast-iron to provide the weight. This is the pit that the box would have occupied; it was pivoted on the wall in the distance, behind which is the metal grille over the shaft.
